The Kew Student Residence was established in 1963, implementing an initiative taken at the time of the church’s centenary to provide a home for rural young people studying in Melbourne.
Immediately behind the church hall and accessed from neighbouring Mary Street, “The Res” is home to around 50 tertiary students each year. Most of the students are from rural Victoria with some from interstate and overseas.
The managers of The Res, Stephen and Michelle Duke, are members of the pastoral team, and many current and former residents are very active in the life and leadership of the church. The management committee of The Res is made up of members of Kew Baptist Church community.
In 2005, The Res purchased “The House”, which is situated between the church and hall. Four or five young adults who are passionate about the ministry of The Res and of the Church occupy “The House” and work hard to strengthen the links between students and the wider church community.
